What is Low Self-esteem?
Self-esteem refers to the way we see and evaluate ourselves, including the value we place on ourselves as a person. When self-esteem is low, negative beliefs about ourselves can shape what we notice and how we interpret our experiences. We may dwell on perceived failures or shortcomings, discount our strengths, or judge ourselves more harshly than we judge others.
These patterns can affect both how we feel and what we expect from the future. They may contribute to low mood, shame or self-doubt, as well as anxiety about failing, being judged or not being good enough. Low self-esteem can also influence behaviour, leading us to hold back, avoid opportunities, seek reassurance or put ourselves under excessive pressure.
Over time, these patterns can reinforce the negative view we already hold of ourselves.
