What are Body Image Difficulties?
Body image refers to the way we perceive, think and feel about our bodies and appearance. It can be influenced by many things, including our experiences, relationships, cultural expectations and comparisons with others. Body image can also change across different stages of life and in response to changes in our bodies.
When body image becomes more negative or preoccupying, attention can become increasingly focused on perceived flaws or aspects of appearance we feel dissatisfied with. This can affect self-esteem and mood, and may lead to self-consciousness, frequent comparison, checking or avoiding mirrors and photos, or holding back from social situations, relationships or activities.
Body image difficulties can range from periods of dissatisfaction or insecurity through to more persistent concerns that significantly affect everyday life and wellbeing.
