Laburnum Psychology is thrilled to announce we will be facilitating a 6-week Tuning into Teens course. This well-regarded, evidence-based program concentrates on strengthening the emotional connection between parents and their adolescents. This program concentrates specifically on the unique developmental needs of teenagers, with an emphasis on empathy and acceptance. It seeks to equip parents and caregivers with tools to manage their own reactions when adolescents push back or seek more autonomy.
The Tuning into Teens course supports parents as their children enter the tumultuous phase of adolescence, characterised by significant changes in physical development with puberty, cognitive growth, greater emotional volatility and personality formation as they establish their distinct identities. The core concept underpinning Tuning into Teens course involves the idea that adolescents enhance their ability to understand emotional experiences and regulate their reactions when their parents address challenging emotions of moderate to low intensity. This involves offering support, comfort, and guidance to help teenagers learn about and manage their emotions.
The Tuning into Teens course is thoughtfully designed by Melbourne University to empower parents by increasing their self-awareness and emotional management abilities. This program also helps parents develop the skills to respond to their children using an emotion-coaching parenting approach. Our facilitators are experienced psychologists and parents themselves, who have personally and professionally witnessed how these skills can significantly improve a teens well-being, mental health, and capacity to manage challenging emotions. This, in turn, fosters more open family communication, stronger bonds, and enriched relationships.
Dealing with negative or disruptive behaviour and addressing adolescent’s mental health challenges can be especially challenging, leaving parents feeling lost and isolated. We want to reassure parents who are in this situation that they are not alone. Our parenting programs are designed to provide strategies for handling the most trying moments with your teen. Our goal is to equip you to work towards your long-term objectives, rather than simply reacting to day-to-day challenges. These groups are being offered to empower parents to take control of their family dynamics and discover effective ways to raise happier, more resilient children and cultivate peaceful and harmonious relationships within the family.
A universally applicable parent program intended for parents of children aged 10 and above, the program’s goal is to enhance the parent-child connection by bettering emotional communication within the family. Tuning into Teens training equips parents with a deeper understanding of their teenager’s emotional experiences, all the while imparting specific skills to facilitate support, empathy, and connection with their adolescents. The program builds upon the foundation of the Tuning into Kids program, which has demonstrated positive effects on younger children.

Naturally it can feel daunting or confronting to talk about uncomfortable feelings or situations. One of our main priorities will be to create a safe and trusting space, and to pace things in a manageable way. Lots of people feel like this when they first come, but by the end of their first session they feel very comfortable and reassured, and glad that they took the step. Sometimes it can help to have a chat with your psychologist over the phone before you first come in. This is something that we can arrange.
It’s not uncommon for people to feel stuck or perhaps even hopeless about the possibility of achieving change. In our experience, talking to a psychologist can make a a genuine and substantial difference. Psychologists are equipped with strategies that are designed to promote change and healing. We will work with you to build a plan to step your way toward greater peace and contentment. In addition to this, sometimes it really just helps to share your situation with a skillful caring person who is listening and giving their full attention to your experiences.
It’s natural for people to sometimes feel this way, or to want to ‘look away’ from the problems. It’s a brave and courageous step to take the time to explore a problem, understand it, express the feelings, and plan a way through it. Sometimes people feel like focusing on the problem will make them feel worse, but it’s actually the opposite of that. By giving some attention to our problems, a lot of changes can be made that significantly increase wellbeing and better mental health. Positive changes are much more likely to come from these brave steps than from looking away.

This is something your psychologist can plan with you at the outset of counselling. Normally, we recommend that you commence with weekly sessions, with the aim to transition to less frequent appointments depending on your progress and situation.
