What is Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) ?
Autism is a neurodevelopmental difference that can shape how a person communicates and relates to others, processes sensory information, responds to change, and experiences interests, routines and the world around them. It is a spectrum, which means there is enormous variation in how autism presents and in the strengths, challenges and support needs of each person.
For some children and adults, autistic characteristics and support needs may be quite apparent, while for others they can be less visible, particularly when someone has learned to adapt or mask aspects of themselves. A comprehensive assessment can help develop a fuller understanding of the person’s individual profile, including their strengths, differences, challenges and support needs. This can inform practical strategies, adjustments and supports at home, school, work or in everyday life.
For adults whose autism was not recognised earlier, assessment can also provide a new way of understanding longstanding experiences and patterns in their lives. Whether identified in childhood or adulthood, greater understanding can help the person and those around them recognise and build on strengths, make sense of areas that are more challenging, and find supports and ways of navigating life that fit the individual person more closely.
