What is Complex Trauma?
Complex trauma can develop following repeated, prolonged or difficult-to-escape traumatic experiences, particularly when these occur within relationships where safety, care or trust would ordinarily be expected. Experiences in childhood can have a particularly significant impact, although complex trauma can also develop following prolonged trauma in adulthood.
The effects of complex trauma can extend beyond the fear, avoidance and intrusive memories commonly associated with trauma. You may find emotions difficult to manage, carry persistent feelings of shame or worthlessness, struggle to trust or feel safe with other people, or notice recurring patterns in relationships that are difficult to understand or change.
These responses can make more sense when understood in the context of what you have experienced. Psychological therapy can help you develop greater understanding of these patterns, process traumatic experiences and find different ways of relating to yourself, your emotions and other people.
