What are Common Women’s Mental Health Issues?
Women’s mental health can be influenced by many of the same experiences and psychological difficulties that affect anyone, while also being shaped by experiences that are more common or particular to women. Relationships, caring responsibilities, work and family pressures, physical health and major life transitions can all affect emotional wellbeing.
Across different stages of life, reproductive and hormonal changes associated with menstruation, pregnancy, the postnatal period, perimenopause and menopause may also influence mood and psychological wellbeing. Women may experience anxiety, depression, stress, difficulties with self-esteem or body image, relationship concerns, grief or other challenges, sometimes in the context of several pressures occurring at once.
Understanding the broader context of what a woman is experiencing can be important in making sense of her difficulties and identifying the kind of psychological support that may be most helpful.
