The team at Laburnum psychology are excited to announce that we will be commencing a group work programme in 2023. We have been thinking about running groups for a while as we believe strongly in the role that group work can play to assist people with their goals for change. We feel that this greatly expands what we can offer to clients who are attending individual therapy at our practice. We believe that our group programs will bring an invaluable dimension for our clients as they progress toward improved mental health, wellbeing and happiness.
Our new site “Laburnum Psychology Connect” has dedicated space for both small and larger group sessions. In March 2023 we will be commencing two 6 week groups. One will be focussed on Self Compassion and the other Mindfulness. Both of these groups will be run by our experienced psychologists and therefore Medicare rebates will be available if you have a GP Mental Health Care Plan.
We are also planning a Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) group to commence in February 2023. This will be run by one of our provisional psychologists who is experienced and skilled in DBT groupwork. Watch this space for more details of what the DBT group will involve.
Self Compassion Group
Self Compassion is a psychological strategy that psychologists use regularly. It’s a simple concept that when applied well in life, can lead to significant positive change and growth. Self Compassion has been found to be extremely useful across a large range of presenting issues. Our Self Compassion groups focus on teaching, applying and practicing strategies to understand and incorporate Self Compassion into your life. We feel confident that group sessions deeply enhance the work you are doing in individual therapy or in your own personal work toward growth and peace.
Mindfulness Group
Mindfulness is a term that us psychologists love, as we know that a simple shift to becoming more mindful can bring profound change within ourselves and for our clients. Sometimes it really is the simple things that make the most difference! Individual therapy sessions will often dedicate time to helping a client be more present in the everyday moments of life. We aim to teach clients strategies that help them to be more connected to their deeper selves, particularly during highly stressful or emotionally difficult times.
Laburnum Psychology believe that these skills can be taught and practiced in a group setting, and that this can enhance the work our clients are doing in individual therapy.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
Everyone struggles from time to time with their mental health and relationships. However, for some people, these struggles are experienced much more severely and frequently, to the point where it fundamentally undermines their wellbeing and appears to be part of who they are.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) was developed to assist those who experience extreme difficulty in relationships, decision-making and emotion regulation. DBT, as created by Marsha Linehan, is best known for assisting those with Borderline Personality Disorder. Alongside this however, it has also been found to be effective for those experiencing emotional dysregulation, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Clinical Depression and addiction. It can also be highly beneficial for people who experience self-harm urges or suicidal thoughts and feelings.
DBT is an evidence based treatment with a heavy emphasis on behaviour change through use of skills. These skills have been found to enhance problem solving capacity, modify interpretations, and moderate emotional responses. They can also enhance a person’s capacity to find acceptance in challenging circumstances. The skills within DBT are comprised across four main modules:
- Core Mindfulness
- Emotional Regulation
- Distress Tolerance
- Interpersonal Effectiveness
